High-protein ketogenic diet (HPKD): This version of the keto diet is often followed by folks who want to preserve their muscle mass like bodybuilders and older people. Rather than protein making up 20 percent of the diet, here it’s 30 percent. Meanwhile, fat goes down to 65 percent of the diet and carbs stay at 5 percent. (Caution: folks with kidney issues shouldn’t up their protein too much.)
if you are not eating organic or wild red and other meats and also ensuring they’ve not been vaccinated with “the usual” poisons that is so ‘mainstream’ now and putting all of humanity at risk, you’re putting yourself and even your offspring at huge risk! Any benefit you may want to derive from following a ketogenic or any diet is pointless in light of what science has known and proven over 20 years ago and which mainstream health care professionals and providers are, respectfully, ignorant of (that’s what they’ve been led to believe by those invested in pharma and their regulatory bodies). If you don’t believe me, watch “The Truth About Vaccines” with an open mind. You won’t regret it. (I have absolutely no investment in nor connection to the producers of that docu~series, I have simply had my “mind blown” by the facts … I’ve been a holistic health practitioner and student for over 40 years so I’m not “convinced” easily.
The key to sticking to keto guidelines is focusing on what you can eat, not what you’re cutting out. If you’re unsure about what’s safe to snack on, you are in luck. We have picked out our favorite, keto-friendly foods that will make eating a fat-centric diet easy and, dare we say it, enjoyable. Keep reading to learn what grocery store items you’ll need to successfully take the ketogenic plunge—as always, consult with your doctor before embarking on a new diet plan.
Many ketogenic dieters also swear by MCT oil. (MCT simply stands for medium chain triglycerides.) MCT's energy-sustaining powers can be explained as follows: When MCT oil is metabolized in the body, it behaves more like a carbohydrate than a fat. Unlike other fats, MCT oil does not go through the lymphatic system. Instead, it is transported directly to the liver where it is metabolized so it releases energy like a carbohydrate and creates lots of ketones (which can be used for fuel) in the process.
“I really believe that the more informed you are about the benefits of a healthy bite versus the chain reaction that you’re going to put into effect in your body when you take that bite — you just suddenly don’t want to make that choice for yourself anymore. It’s beyond willpower at that point; it’s become a desire to do something good for yourself.” — Christie Brinkley
A lot of people on the keto diet tend to go absolutely overboard with the unhealthy food that they pack into their plan. Sure a bunch of cheese, mayonnaise and bacon will fit into a seventy-five percent fat allowance, however, for your health these foods are not always the best option. Your day to day seventy-five percent fat allowance is meant to be used for healthy sources of fat such as such avocados, coconut oil, whole eggs, nuts and fats found in unprocessed meats such as beef, salmon, chicken thighs, ground pork or turkey.
Hi Hannah! Thanks for stopping by from PJ affiliates. Actually my information is correct. Trust me, I do make mistakes from time to time, but Keto is actually a low carb, moderate protein, high fat diet. You can have fruit on Keto. That's the great thing about Keto as long as it fits your macros and won't throw you out of ketosis you can eat a variety of foods and you should! Natural and clean foods are great sources of vitamins and minerals that your bodies need to thrive and survive and while it's a great idea to go easy on foods that will cause insulin spikes when you first start Keto once you reach your goal weight and entire maintence mode you can add more and more fruits and veggies. What many people don't understand is glycemic load and glycemic index and that's something I plan to start talking about here very soon! We aren't paleo believe me my family wishes we were! Thanks again for the visit and if you're interested in learning more about how we do Keto keep stopping by!
Thank you so much for posting this information. My family and friends all see how Keto is helping me and I have already directed others to this site. Diabetes is one issue for a lot of us and my friend Charlotte lives with us and she is 74. I take care of her and as of January we are both off insulin. She is off all medication and I still have 4 to go from 27 medications. You have been very helpful and the recipes I get in email are really good. Thank you again.

Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): If you find it difficult to stick to a very low-carb diet every day, especially for months on end, you might want to consider a carb-cycling diet instead. Carb cycling increases carbohydrate intake (and sometimes calories in general) only at the right time and in the right amounts, usually about 1–2 times per week (such as on weekends).
This week we’re introducing a slight fast. We’re going to get full on fats in the morning and fast all the way until dinner time. Not only are there a myriad of health benefits to this, it’s also easier on our eating schedule (and cooking schedule). I suggest eating (rather, drinking) your breakfast at 7am and then eating dinner at 7pm. Keeping 12 hours between your 2 meals. This will help put your body into a fasted state.
Eggs are a healthy, nutrient-dense food that has been incorrectly maligned for years. Cholesterol in food doesn’t increase cholesterol in your blood, so eat eggs liberally – they’re packed with protein and lutein, and they fill you up for hours. Make a healthy omelet with some cheddar, crumbled breakfast sausage, and shredded spinach and you’re already looking at over 30g of protein, just for breakfast! Spinach is a great source of magnesium and potassium, too. Add some sea salt and you’ve got a big dose of electrolytes that are so vital to maintaining energy and staving off headaches. In the book the art and science of low carbohydrate performance. By Volek and Phinney. I read a section about coconut oil where basically they said “Ingestion of MCT oil will result in significant ketosis even if consumed with carbohydrates, although this MCT-induced ketone production may not be associated with the full spectrum of metabolic benefits associated with carbohydrate restricted keto-adaptation. Thus we do not encourage the use of MCT oil”. That said, however, neither do we discourage consuming foods that naturally contain MCT’s”.
Those of you who may be new to what they call “keto flu” might panic, thinking your death is imminent. I can assure you that it is highly unlikely that you will die from sugar/carb withdrawal – but just to be sure it’s always wise to consult your doctor before you embark on any new eating plan, or if something feels truly off it’s better to be safe than sorry – seek medical attention if you feel it’s necessary. Most symptoms can be alleviated by supplementing and drinking enough water (see #3 and >4.)
Once you understand the principles behind how the ketogenic diet works, then it’s time to get cooking, quite literally! This is a part that many people struggle with— they don’t necessarily know what recipes are “keto friendly”.  So we at Keto-Mojo have decided to start adding in some monthly cookbook reviews to help you get started in filling your library and your plate with delicious recipes!

I’m so excited to have come across your site!! You’ve seriously done so much work and I appreciate it! I’m researching this keto life and plan to jump in once we are back from vacation for a lifestyle change for myself and my husband too! Looking forward to learning more and loving your meal plans! Glad to see 12 weeks! I know I won’t get bored! Thanks so much!
Hi, I’m still a bit skeptical, I have seen some of my friends do the keto diet, and have had good results. Though I am still not sure about the idea of the fats being eaten. They say they eat meat with the fat and must do so, is this correct? Also isn’t this not good for the body especially for the kidneys? Second, can a diabetic do this diet? There are many questions running through my head.
A: The most common ways to track your carbs is through MyFitnessPal and their mobile app. You cannot track net carbs on the app, although you can track your total carb intake and your total fiber intake. To get your net carbs, just subtract your total fiber intake from your total carb intake. I have written an article on How to Track Carbs on MyFitnessPal.

Use fat as a lever.  We’ve been taught to fear fat, but don’t! Both keto and low carb are high fat diets. Fat is our source of energy as well as satiety. The key to understand, though, is that fat is a lever on a low carb or keto diet. Carbs and protein stay constant, and fat is the one you increase or decrease (push the lever up or down) to gain or lose weight, respectively. So if your goal is weight loss, eat enough fat to be satisfied, but there’s no need to “get your fats in” once you’re satisfied.

First and foremost, the keto diet is all about ratios: you want to make sure that carbohydrates make up 10 percent or less of your total caloric intake, with 15-25 percent from protein, and the remainder from healthy fat. Eating in this manner will help your body achieve ketosis, a metabolic process that occurs when the body resorts to burning fat for fuel, which only happens when glucose reserves are depleted. In basic terms, successfully following the keto diet means cutting out all sources of sugar and most carbohydrates and loading up on foods with high fat contents.
At the core of the classic keto diet is severely restricting intake of all or most foods with sugar and starch (carbohydrates). These foods are broken down into sugar (insulin and glucose) in our blood once we eat them, and if these levels become too high, extra calories are much more easily stored as body fat and results in unwanted weight gain. However, when glucose levels are cut off due to low-carb intake, the body starts to burn fat instead and produces ketones that can be measured in the blood (using urine strips, for example).
I love this! I am an amateur powerlifter and I have recently started using the keto diet as there is only so much gained by being a fat powerlifter but working out my macros was driving me nuts as I also work as a disability support worker and need to take meals and so on to work with me. Thanks to this I can now have better control of the macros to bring my weight down without doing to much harm to my lifts! Thank you for this!
You should note that cutting the amount of sugar that you consume can help you to answer questions like how to lose five pounds of extra weight in a week. The key thing here is that low carb weekly diet plans are efficient and effective when you learn not only to consume fewer carbs but also how to control the portions and select snacks which are healthier to take when you get hungry in the day. Taking a snack that is rich in fat and protein will definitely last you longer than going for one that is full of carbs and sugar. This, in turn, means that you will be going to get hungry again after a short period of time and there is a possibility that you will take another snack repeating the very same vicious cycle.
To wrap up the loose ends, it is worth to note that a keto diet plan or ketogenic diet helps the user’s body to burn the excess fat instead of carbohydrates. The main theory behind keto diet plan is that your overall body can rely only on the fats to get energy for normal functioning, in the process it reduces the sugar that the user eats. Adding this diet to your daily routine will naturally help you to start burning the calories from fat that you take, which will in turn transition into reliance on the fat stored in your body. Keto diet plan for weight loss has been researched by the scientific and medical community and adding it to your diet will result in so many benefits. Those who have used it mostly experience improvement in weight loss goals, better energy, and fewer cravings. You can order all of the above keto diet plans online from the list at the top page
A small Feb. 20, 2017, study looked at the impact of a six-week ketogenic diet on physical fitness and body composition in 42 healthy adults. The study, published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism, found a mildly negative impact on physical performance in terms of endurance capacity, peak power and faster exhaustion. Overall, researchers concluded, “Our findings lead us to assume that a [ketogenic diet] does not impact physical fitness in a clinically relevant manner that would impair activities of daily living and aerobic training.” The “significant” weight loss of about 4.4 pounds, on average, did not affect muscle mass or function.

This month we look at a cookbook by two of the most well-known ketogenic bloggers on YouTube, Megha Barot and Matt Gaedke of KetoConnect. Keto Made Easy is a collection of recipes that cover everything from breakfasts, dinners, snacks, and sides to a few different meal plans that utilize those recipes in the book.  Starting with their personal story, the authors then move into kitchen and ingredients tips, how to start keto in five easy steps, and their keys to success.
I am trying to get back into keto. I did it before and I was so happy when I lost 10lbs (I did the keto for a month). I am ready to go back to this lifestyle. All this information is very helpful, I have written it all down so it can be easier for me to remember what is allowed and what is not. Looking forward to get back on this keto journey. Thank you for all the great info.
Ketosis takes some time to get into – about two weeks of low carb eating is required for the initial adaptation. During this time there will be bouts of sluggishness, fatigue, headaches, and some gastrointestinal issues as you adapt, often referred to as “keto flu“. Proper electrolyte intake will correct most of these issues. In addition, the “diet” aspect of this ketogenic diet plan – that is, the caloric restriction – shouldn’t be worried about. Weight loss will come as your body regulates appetite as it the addiction to sugar and processed food lessens, so restricting calories during the initial two weeks isn’t recommended.
I used an online keto calculator to set a goal for calories, carbs and fat. I mostly followed the suggestions, with the exception of fat. The calculator suggested over 200 grams of fat each day. That's tough to hit without loading ghee into my coffee or swigging some coconut oil before lunch. Can it be done? Absolutely. I just couldn't get there. For me, the focus was on reducing carbs. I let the other pieces just fall into place.
How about plain Greek yogurt? Cabot is 63% calories from fat (23g fat, 12g carb, 18g protein), and Voskos is 69% (20g fat, 8g carb, 12g protein). I wasn’t sure I could like plain yogurt, but the Cabot is quite tasty. I guess when you don’t take all the fat out of something, you don’t need to add sugar to make it taste good. I have to see if I can find the Voskos locally.
Is sour cream keto? If you are able to tolerate dairy, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to add sour cream to just about everything you eat. It’s such a rich source of fat while providing amazing flavor and luxurious texture to anything you eat. I’ve put sour cream on top of steak, eggs, even vegetables. Just a couple of tablespoons of sour cream will give your fat intake the boost it needs to help you get into that glorious state of nutritional ketosis. I use the full-fat versions of either Breakstone’s or Daisy, depending on which is on sale. They go on something I eat just about every day. Enjoy!

In the first week, many people report headaches, mental fogginess, dizziness, and aggravation. Most of the time, this is the result of your electrolytes being flushed out, as ketosis has a diuretic effect. Make sure you drink plenty of water and keep your sodium intake up.6One of the fathers of keto, Dr. Phinney, shows that electrolyte levels (especially sodium) can become unbalanced with low carb intake.
I also have to tell you that you are HILARIOUS! I laughed so hard reading your lead up to the 3 day plan. Thank you for your guidance, honesty, outstanding sense of humor (we all need it), incredibly delicious recipes and your baffling organization. I truly don’t know how you get it all done. You make it “do-able” and fun. I’m actually excited to start!

I have a question on sugar since I see it’s not allowed. Is splenda or any other sugar subsitute ok? What if one of the ingredients that is required for a keto recipe contains sugar, does it matter? I haven’t really seen any discussion on how some things may already contain sugar (even if in low doses) may affect the keto diet. Should they be avoided altogether?
Did I leave off one of your favorite high-fat foods that you enjoy on your own personal plan? Feel free to share it with us in the comment section below along with the percentage of calories from fat it provides. Perfect keto diet foods should be part of all of your low carb high fat meals. Also, please provide any specific topics you would like for me to address in future CarbSmart columns about nutritional ketosis. THANK YOU for reading and I look forward to continuing to share this amazing journey with you.
You’re transitioning. Your body is equipped to process a high intake of carbs and a lower intake of fat. Your body needs to create enzymes to be able to do this. In the transitional period, the brain may run low on energy which can lead to grogginess, nausea, and headaches. If you’re having a large problem with this, you can choose to reduce carb intake gradually.

The common misconception about the keto diet is that it contains no fibre, and instead the dieter is left eating mountains of bacon rashers, bulletproof coffees, butter and steak. In reality, a well-formulated keto diet will consist of an array of wholefoods including leafy greens, healthy fats from nuts, seeds and coconut, and a small amount of fruit. When keto is done properly, quality fibre is provided in abundance.

I’m an avid reader of health blogs and dieting and i have been wanting to start the Ketogenic diet after hearing that my mother's friend used it to lose well over one hundred pounds and is now a healthy normal weight and I have read this and am starting my diet soon and this does not seem difficult, it seems reasonable for a lifestyle change that will actually work andI don't think I will feel hungry or tired on this diet and I think this book discussed many important Keto diet tips that will help you have an effective Keto diet plan and there are certain food that you need to avoid and there are food that is good for you and help you lose weight and Once you are in this diet, you are also prone to having constipation and many other problems so this guide helps you prepare for those problems and risks.
Low carb diet enthusiasts also commonly point to the insulin-carbohydrate hypothesis, claiming that cutting carbs will help you store less body fat. This theory is based off the fact that higher carb intake increases insulin secretion, and insulin plays an important role in distributing and storing energy by promoting glucose uptake into your body's cells - including your muscle, liver and fat cells. Because of this, insulin technically promotes fat storage. However, it is more complex than that. Insulin is not the only hormone that promote fat storage and research continues to suggest that fat storage primarily occurs when you eat too many calories, not carbs in particular (3).

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder, and it affects women of reproductive age. Symptoms include obesity, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. A pilot study took 11 women through 24 weeks of a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (20 grams or less per day). Among the five who completed the study, they lost 12 percent of their weight on average and reduced fasting insulin by 54 percent. Additionally, two women who previously experienced infertility problems became pregnant. (6)
The keto diet isn’t new, and it’s been around for nearly a century. It was originally developed to treat people with epilepsy. In the 1920s, researchers found that raised levels of ketones in the blood led to fewer epileptic seizures in patients. The keto diet is still used today to treat children with epilepsy who don’t respond well to anti-epileptic drugs.[2]
When you eat a ketogenic diet, you switch your body’s fuel source to fat rather than the body’s usual source, glucose (1). From this fuel source switch, the hunger hormone, Ghrelin, is reduced which causes your appetite to decrease (1). Because of the reduction in appetite, it is easier to adopt an intermittent fasting approach or an approach that lessons unwanted eating behavior outside your desired hours (AKA curbs the late night munchies). Therefore, I recommend eating 4 bigger meals rather than 6 small meals on a Ketogenic Meal Plan.
Avocado’s are a huge staple food for most keto dieters and we’re no different. You might be able to find a good deal on premade guacamole though. If that’s the case, feel free to go for that and sub out the avocado. If you don’t like broccoli or cauliflower you can try mushrooms or zucchini. If you don’t like any of those you should probably learn to like vegetables!!! But you could also just double down on the salad.
Thomas delauer diet plan guidebook by Thomas Delauer is a very informative course that is geared towards creating awareness to individuals about the most effective and efficient means of transforming their body metabolism in a natural way. This allows their body to have the ability to burn the additional fat well, while they continue to enjoy the healthy and delicious foods that are around them. The course claims that when you follow the professional advice it offers you to the latter, your body will have the ability to achieve about twenty to thirty percent more energy in a natural way while giving your body an opportunity to adapt to healthier conditions. This program that was designed by Thomas Delauer is not aimed at restricting food intake or counting calories, but it is about eating and enjoying the right foods in your life.
I hadnt been able , prior to ketosis to even put my feet down..my legs shins and big toes were in agony.. Now My energy level is higher and my feet are great, I walked seven miles the other day ..overall I’ve lost eighteen pounds in just six weeks …I have an extremely low appetite now, and the gaps between meals are variable between sixteen and twenty hours..
First, you should note that Bacon & Butter program deeply talks about the key high carbs that its users should avoid adding to their daily diet. By avoiding those high carb products, users will have the ability to ensure that they remain within the tenants of the average kenotic diet and their bodies will enter into ketosis state. When ketosis starts, the body will definitely turn to fat stored in the body as a source of energy and the process of weight loss will continue.

I totally understand how you feel! 😊 But the truth is that most people can't do that... speaking from my own experience. When I started following a low-carb diet my palate was completely different to what it is now and I couldn't imagine skipping sweeteners, bread alternatives and other substitutes. They helped me transition into the way I eat now. These days I don't use any sweeteners - or just a small amount in occasional treats. I keep my diet very simple and often cook with just 5-10 ingredients.

Thankyou for the breakdown! I’m quite excited to get started. I’m a T1 newly diagnosed (6m) and the hospital educator had me eating 30gm Carbs per meal which saw me a) Nearly vomit every meal as it was too much food b) gain a ridiculous amount of weight! (never really been a big carb eater, but my issue was not eating frequently!) (15+kg gained!) so bring on 2019 with a better relationship with food and a better relationship with myself, knowing how and what works with for my body. blessings xx😘

You’re ok with not so fast results and can remain disciplined.Every weight loss management plan needs an amount of sacrifice as well as a compromise from the dieter. But the ketosis approach may be one of the most challenging because it will change the most sacred of all eating routines among Western cultures: enjoying a full-dish meal. It's certainly no picnic, but the procedure can be done simpler having the right products and program, and the results can be spectacular.

Hi Sara, it depends on if your husband eats cold food or not. The lunch suggested here is great to take to work, the chicken can be enjoyed cold, or he can reheat it in a pan if his office has a small kitchen. If he doesn’t like cold chicken and he has no option to reheat you could change the lunch and dinner options suggested in this meal plan. He can eat the egg and salad for lunch. It’s a great lunch to enjoy cold and then the chicken and baby spinach for dinner instead. Great cold lunches that are keto friendly in general are always hard-boiled eggs with veggies, or turkey/cheese roll-ups and raw veggies, or salad greens with shredded chicken or shredded pork with homemade mayo on the side to then mix up at the moment as a salad dressing.

My roomate would be considered overweight for someone on Keto, so would her fiancee or myself or my husband. She has lost over 145 pds her fiancee over 100 pds, myself 40 and my husband over 115. It works incredibly well, and you Mok are unbelievably rude. Just because someone is following a change in diet doesn’t necessarily mean they are at their goal weight, everyone reacts differently and loses at a different pace. And thank you so much for sharing these tips and recipes.

Therefore, when you’re following a ketogenic diet plan for beginners, your body is burning fat for energy rather than carbohydrates, so in the process most people lose weight and excess body fat rapidly, even when consuming lots of fat and adequate calories through their daily food intake. Another major benefit of the keto diet is that there’s no need to count calories, feel hungry or attempt to burn loads of calories through hours of intense exercise.

Reaction to eggs could be due to the following: Read Healthy Traditions website regarding chickens being fed soy – soy will be in the eggs. If you can’t get truly organic soy corn free eggs, you may order through them. It is said all soy, even organic is contaminated GE, plus it is said by reliable sources that organic soy, if consumed, should only be fermented. Non organic soy and corn are GE and heavily sprayed with diluted white phosphorus and flamydahyde (sp?) embalming fluid i.e. glousphate (sp) in Roundup Ready among other toxic chemical witch’s brews that farmers use requiring wearing hazmat suits.
"Plenty of people jump right in, thinking all they have to do is cut carbs and increase fat. All of a sudden, they hit a wall and get 'keto flu.' They feel tired, lethargic, and experience headaches," Wittrock says. "The primary reason they get these symptoms is lack of the three primary electrolytes: sodium, potassium, and magnesium. If you're deficient in any of these, you'll suffer mentally and physically. This is the single biggest reason people fail on the keto diet."

On a ketogenic diet, you’re generally eating a diet that’s high in fat (roughly 70 percent of your total calories come from fat), moderate in protein (about 20 percent of your calories), and low in carbohydrate (about 5 percent of calories). By limiting carbohydrates (to usually less than 45 grams for the average person), your body lacks the glucose (from carbs) that it normally uses for energy, so it eventually switches over to burning fat as its primary fuel source instead; through a metabolic process called ketosis, the liver converts the fat into fragments of fatty acids called ketones, which power the brain and other organs and tissues.

Heading out to buy the book and avocados! Love those things. I just cut them up and top with Tanjin spice (got at Walmart – tastes like guacamole with it on). I want to try this as I need to loose 15 lbs. Thanks so much for the help Jimmy! I can’t eat dairy but the other stuff looks good. Taking bacon out of the freezer to cook tomorrow. Rarely make it though my daughters love the stoff, but will have to change that and make much more often.
