Tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, banana, papaya, etc.) and some high-carb fruit (tangerine, grapes, etc.) Also avoid fruit juices (yes, even 100% fresh juices!) - better to drink smoothies if any, but either way very limited. Juices are just like sugary water, but smoothies have fiber, which is at least more sating. This also includes dried fruit (dates, raisins, etc).

I have the same problem with a missing gallbladder. I use coconut oil topically- I slather it on my skin. Usually, I add olive oil, mineral salts and some nice smelling essential oils. One caution- you do have to give it time to absorb through the skin before you get dressed. I haven’t tried the blood ketone meter yet (just ordered one through Amazon), but it did help me increase ketone levels based on the ketostick.

I just don’t understand why people still need it. I am so elated to be free from its hold! They will say, “Look what I found!” They’ll show a label that says “LOW CARB” or “KETO.” It often has a list of ingredients that is as long as one’s arm. Or it is a low-carb version of some high-carb treat, like candies, syrups, sweets or desserts. Artificial sweeteners abound. High-priced supplements, MCT oils and exogenous ketones are common.
"You can find a lot of "fat bomb" recipes on the Internet," Wittrock says. I was really looking forward to this book as there is so much info out there and I really needed something to simplify the specifics. Well...I was playing around with the sample menus and adding them into myfitnesspal and the grams he listed per meal plan are totally off (and not in a favorable sense) from MFP...and I find MFP to be very accurate. So be careful, when you think you’re eating a specific amount carbs/protein grams, that just isn’t the case.

If you have noticed that you rarely feel satisfied when you eat out, it is simply because most restaurant meals are low in fat and as such, you might be tempted to take on more carbs in order to feel full. Don’t give in to this temptation, instead, you should ask for and melt extra butter on your meat or vegetables. If you ordered salads, you can request for and drizzle extra olive oil over the salads.
I have a question on sugar since I see it’s not allowed. Is splenda or any other sugar subsitute ok? What if one of the ingredients that is required for a keto recipe contains sugar, does it matter? I haven’t really seen any discussion on how some things may already contain sugar (even if in low doses) may affect the keto diet. Should they be avoided altogether?

Well 18 is pretty close to 20, and I’m so mad at myself for letting it happen! I kept thinking I could lose it all fast by getting back on the wagon, but now it will probably take me months. Yea, no bread/pasta for me, by all accounts I was eating a (what I thought and what everyone would tell me, even a dietician I went to!) ‘healthy’ diet of whole grains, rice, fruit, vegetables, low fat, etc. and couldn’t understand why I was steadily gaining weight. That’s what led me here, as I was getting so frustrated and the more I read up on low carb/ketosis and how the body processes even conventionally healthy foods, it made sense to me, but I don’t think I can give up oatmeal and fruit forever! So I will definitely just make sure I only eat those in small amounts, but that is much farther down the road anyway.. I’m on to Week 1 and I’ll post an update at the end of the week. Thanks again!
For the person concerned about fibre, my high-fat breakfast often consists of a bowl of milled flax prepared like one would oatmeal with two added tablespoons of peanut butter on top and a cup of almond milk on the side. I make flax a part of my daily diet because it’s got such a great fibre boost and I love the taste. I did this this morning for breakfast and came out with 12 g of fibre for that meal alone. Also, my morning snack, 2 oz of almonds, had 327 calories and 7 g of fibre.

Regarding dark chocolate, I’ll have to check out the Taza, as I’ve never heard of it before and it sounds a little similar to my favorite: Endangered Species 88% (chocolatebar.com). It has a slightly coarse mouth-feel — much more interesting than, say, Ghirardelli, which I find too smooth and bland — and the flavor has hints of coffee bean.
What makes this diet so special is that it changes how your body feels and most importantly how your body uses energy, placing you into a state known as ketosis. This is actually where all the magic begins to happen; in this state your body starts to utilize substances known as ketone bodies which are produced by the breakdown of your body fats. Your body loves glucose and if it has that on hand it’s going to use that first for energy. On the keto diet, the amount of carbohydrates decreases drastically, which in turn will lead to less production of glucose. High levels of glucose production is generally what makes you fat; without it, the body will begin to start breaking down your body fat and this is when you start to get leaner.

Leftovers will be another thing we will take into consideration. Not only is it easier on you, but why put yourself through the hassle to cook the same food more than once? Breakfast is something I normally do leftover style, where I don’t have to worry about it in the morning and I certainly don’t have to stress about it. Grab some food out the fridge, pre-made for me, and head out the door. It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?
