Over 8–10 mmol/l: It’s normally impossible to get to this level just by eating a keto diet. It means that something is wrong. The most common cause by far is type 1 diabetes, with severe lack of insulin. Symptoms include feeling very sick with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and confusion. The possible end result, ketoacidosis, may be fatal and requires immediate medical care. Learn more
Cauliflower is definitely my favorite low carb veggie Lora – it’s so versatile! But you can also enjoy loads of spinach, broccoli, swiss chard, zucchini, celery, eggplant, cucumbers, and even spaghetti squash! Kale, tomatoes, onions, garlic, mushrooms, even pumpkin in moderation. Potatoes are mostly a no no unless you are in maintenance mode and even then very sparingly!

That doesn’t mean you’ll go hungry on a diet. It’s quite the opposite! You’re not starving yourself of calories but of carbohydrates. Your body won’t go into what’s known as starvation mode, which is where your metabolic rate drops considerably. You’re adding more fat to the diet and taking out the carbs, so the metabolism can still work, and you get the energy you need.
A lot of people take their macros as a “set in stone” type of thing. You shouldn’t worry about hitting the mark every single day to the dot. If you’re a few calories over some days, a few calories under on others – it’s fine. Everything will even itself out in the end. It’s all about a long term plan that can work for you, and not the other way around.
A one-ounce (28-gram) serving of olives contains 2 grams of total carbs and 1 gram of fiber. This works out to a net carb count of 1 gram for 7–10 olives, depending on their size. If you don’t like olives or don’t want the net carbs they contain, then olive oil is a great option as well. Although you won’t get all of the benefits of olives by consuming olive oil, you will still get plenty of healthy fats and health-promoting compounds.
When you eat foods high in carbohydrates and fat, your body naturally produces glucose. Carbohydrates are the easiest thing for the body to process, and therefore it will use them first – resulting in the excess fats to be stored immediately. In turn, this causes weight gain and health problems that are associated with high fat, high carbohydrate diets (NOT keto).

There is one gotcha with eggs that needs to be stated. Despite the high fat content, you can actually get an insulin spike from consuming too many eggs at once. The yolks are high in Leucine, and the protein of egg whites is rapidly utilized. That combo (Leucine + highly bioavailable amino acids) is one that bodybuilders use to create a sizeable insulin spike in the absence of carbohydrates.
I’ve been on a keto diet for about six weeks now, and this challenge is the one I hear about the most. Many curious people are turned off from trying the ketogenic diet because it sounds extremely difficult: counting calories, only eating certain foods, not eating lots of other foods, not knowing what to eat out at a restaurant, having to cook more… scary!

Many people start diets with goals like losing 20 pounds in 2 weeks and think that the faster they shed weight, the healthier they are. The truth is that a biological organism like a human is not designed to drop weight rapidly. Our bodies are remarkable survival machines. I often wish people a slow weight loss journey, perhaps 0.5 lbs of fat per week. While people claim they want to drop 20 by next Tuesday, really the goal is to have that 20lb off, and live a much more healthful lifestyle for the rest of their life. The more effective approach is to lose that weight over a longer period of time, and get comfortable with the new habits you will form on a ketogenic diet.

Adding heavy cream or half-and-half to your coffee is one way to get an additional source of fat into your day, says Keatley. Just realize that it is a source of saturated fat — and, given the small serving size, it’s easy to go overboard. According to the USDA, 1 tbsp has 51 calories, 5 g of fat (3.5 g saturated fat), and is just shy of ½ g of carbohydrate.

Jimmy, i am type 2 diabetic on insulin. Last April I had a first time bout of pancreatitis and spent 4 days in the hospital. Also 2 years ago I was on a ketogenic diet, lost 30 pounds and my blood work and blood pressure were all in normal ranges and was able to get off all my meds. I have been dealing with diabetic educators who have me eating 105-130 carbs a day. My weight has skyrocketed and my blood sugars are way up also. Would going on a keto diet again harm my pancreas and liver. I was able to get off all my meds, felt great and enjoyed the keto way of life. I believe that I am carbohydrate intolerant according to my blood sugar records for past 2 years. No one mentions pancreatitis that my doctor said was caused by very high triglycerides. Everything I read does not address my question. Thank you for any help you can provide. I have your book Keto Clarity and reading it with a fine tooth comb. Thank you and congratulations on you success with keto.
