My question is – where do you suggest I start? I have never done Keto, but I have done South Beach several years ago and lost 28 lbs on that so I know I’m ok with no carbs. Is it best to start with the 3 day plan? Or best to do one of your fasts first? Should I ease my way in or do your super strict 30 day Keto challenge? I’d love to know the pros & cons of where to start.
The keto diet is a high-fat and low-carb (HFLC) diet. I would actually describe it as extremely low-carb—you're allowed to eat just 20 grams in a day. Some people on keto follow a net-carb plan (you can subtract the grams of fiber from a food's total carbs) and you're allowed to eat more carbs in a day. For my 30-day diet and for the sake of simplicity, I stuck with total carbs.
For someone new to the ketogenic diet this is a great starting cookbook. The explanations and details within the first quarter of the book are important in informing the reader about the different ingredients that will be utilized in the recipes that you may not be familiar with. Not only do the authors do an excellent job of describing the ingredients and their purpose, but they also offer suggestions of their preferred brands. Most ingredients and spices used in this book are staples in ketogenic households. Finally, the kitchen tips provide insight into storing the final products as well as temperature suggestions for preheating and ingredients.
I heard about ketogenic diet from a friend and how it had helped her weight issues, so I got curious and got this. Upon reading this book, I am now more informed on how ketogenic diet operates, its benefits, and considerations. I liked that Young is upfront with the risks in undergoing this diet as well as presenting the benefits. This diet is not for all and the faint hearted. It will take commitment and a great deal of planning to pull it off. Sadly, I’m not up for the challenge. I don’t think I can keep up the diet with the experimentation, measuring and whatnots. Anyway, this is just my opinion based from my own observation of my body, family commitments, and capabilities. Feel free to try it, who knows, it might just work out for you!
This one should be a “well duh,” as butter is a staple of any good low carb lifestyle change. But when you are attempting to achieve nutritional ketosis, it’s even more important that you deliberately add butter to foods, for both the flavor and the fat content. My favorite brand of butter is Kerrygold grass-fed unsalted (in the silver packaging). Once you get a taste of this bright gold goodness you’ll never go back to anything else! I usually fry up 2-3 eggs in 2-3 tablespoons of butter – it’s an incredibly tasty way to start the day. Why anyone would continue to eat a man-made product like margarine thinking it’s a “healthy” food, when they could be eating butter, is beyond my comprehension.
Being healthy is all about getting the right nutrients and vitamins from your food so always include variety in your diet. Have plenty of meat (or fish), dairy and veggies on a daily basis based on this low carb food list. Use coconut oil and olive oil when you cook and in your salads (respectively) and have a handful of nuts or berries from time to time.
hi I have been following this diet have not had any sugar and I just want to know how am I going over the carbs I’m eating vegetables which I know are carbs but I’m not overdoing it. What is the best way to keep up with your carbs fats and proteins also do I need a scale? I feel like I lost weight this week but most of it was probably water weight I was in ketosis on Thursday and today it shows I’m not. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Hey Sherry, all of my recipes call for Whole Eggs. It looks like my recipe plugin is adding the word "White" because I use white eggs in my calculator. It's just a title issue. I am updating them all to read Large Eggs. You are not the first person that thought it was supposed to be egg whites so I need to get these changed ASAP! I totally agree, the whole egg is best and that's all we really use in the Keto Diet! Thank you so much for checking out our site and for letting me know about this.
Con: Results can vary depending on how much fluid you drink. By drinking more water, you dilute the concentration of ketones in the urine and thus a lower level of ketones will be detected on the strips. The strips don’t show a precise ketone level. Finally, and most importantly, as you become increasingly keto-adapted and your body reabsorbs ketones from the urine, urine strips may become unreliable, even if you’re in ketosis.
The “Slaw Hash” Which is a actually eggroll filling without the wrapper is delicious even without being keto. My husband requests it every other week and he isn’t even really fond of cabbage. I use shredded cabbage, a few finely sliced white mushrooms, sliced white onion, ground pork or turkey, soy sauce, white pepper, a cap-full of bombay sapphire gin (tastes sort of like sake, without having to add a TON of sake), and one shredded carrot.
Hi Julie, thank you for stopping by. As someone who has been on this diet for over three years, I can tell you that eventually, you will be able to add more fruits into your diet. Remember that once you reach your goal weight you will be in maintenance mode and will have more food options. You may find that bananas cause you to crave sweets and may never eat them again, but I loved adding fruits back in my diet!
1. Eat less than 20g net carbs per day if you want to get into ketosis. Net carbs are calculated by subtracting the fiber grams (or sugar alcohols in some cases) from the total carb grams. Don’t guess – you’d be surprised how many grams of carbs there are in things you might have considered “free” like onions, garlic, tomatoes, and kale, just to name a few.
In the book the art and science of low carbohydrate performance. By Volek and Phinney. I read a section about coconut oil where basically they said “Ingestion of MCT oil will result in significant ketosis even if consumed with carbohydrates, although this MCT-induced ketone production may not be associated with the full spectrum of metabolic benefits associated with carbohydrate restricted keto-adaptation. Thus we do not encourage the use of MCT oil”. That said, however, neither do we discourage consuming foods that naturally contain MCT’s”.
I stick to the rim of the store. If I am in a rush I might pick up a small piece of organic chicken or beef for my husband and me from the butcher counter and make sure they wrap it in paper. These days, however, I generally skip the grocery meat section. We now buy most meat products at a neighborhood butcher who has grass-fed, local selections and who doesn’t use the ubiquitous Styrofoam trays and cling wrap. I can’t stand plastic and I want to do my bit to support local farmers doing holistic husbandry.
You’ve probably heard about the low carb, high fat diet that’s so popular among actors and models, and with good reason: low carb diets offer proper nourishment with whole foods, while keeping your body burning fat for fuel. This is a great way to be, as it makes fat loss largely effortless! But where does this “ketogenic” word fit into the picture?
Jimmy is the true definition of a low-carb success story. In 2004, he went from his all-time highest weight of 410 pounds to an incredible 230 pounds eating copious amounts of yummy, thick-sliced bacon, baby! That's an eye-popping 180-pound weight loss--but more importantly Jimmy gained a fresh new perspective and appreciation for the robust health he had been given thanks to high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb living. That's what drives him to blog, record podcasts, make YouTube videos, write books about this healthy way of eating and whatever else he can do to spread the word to as many people as possible. We've been reading Jimmy's blog columns at his popular Livin' La Vida Low-Carb blog for many years and we're proud to include his over-the-top style at CarbSmart.
