The key to sticking to keto guidelines is focusing on what you can eat, not what you’re cutting out. If you’re unsure about what’s safe to snack on, you are in luck. We have picked out our favorite, keto-friendly foods that will make eating a fat-centric diet easy and, dare we say it, enjoyable. Keep reading to learn what grocery store items you’ll need to successfully take the ketogenic plunge—as always, consult with your doctor before embarking on a new diet plan.

Avocado’s are a huge staple food for most keto dieters and we’re no different. You might be able to find a good deal on premade guacamole though. If that’s the case, feel free to go for that and sub out the avocado. If you don’t like broccoli or cauliflower you can try mushrooms or zucchini. If you don’t like any of those you should probably learn to like vegetables!!! But you could also just double down on the salad.
Your comment:–“Your stomach shrinks so much that suddenly a couple strawberries is like eating a seven layer chocolate cake” got my attention, could that possibly is happenning to me and reading your article makes me realize that I am still eating the same portion size as I was eating before starting Keto— Im always bloated and indisgeted after I eat,I recently started taking digestive enzymes but its not working,I feel like a have a huge ‘ball’ inside my stomach ….any advice??? On a ketogenic diet, you’re generally eating a diet that’s high in fat (roughly 70 percent of your total calories come from fat), moderate in protein (about 20 percent of your calories), and low in carbohydrate (about 5 percent of calories). By limiting carbohydrates (to usually less than 45 grams for the average person), your body lacks the glucose (from carbs) that it normally uses for energy, so it eventually switches over to burning fat as its primary fuel source instead; through a metabolic process called ketosis, the liver converts the fat into fragments of fatty acids called ketones, which power the brain and other organs and tissues.
This week we’re getting stricter with our fasting. We had a full week of intermittent fasting and now we’re going to skip breakfast and lunch. Water is our BEST friend here! Don’t forget that you can drink coffee, tea, flavored water, and the like to get your liquids in. Keep drinking to make sure you’re not thinking about your stomach. It MIGHT start growling, just ignore it – your body will adjust with time.

Everyone wants to save money right? Well, this blog post will lay out a comprehensive plan for saving money while eating a healthy keto diet. Low carb on a budget is simple, it just takes some planning and flexibility to use whatever is on sale. Before we get too far into it I’d like to lay out the whole suite we have put together for anyone looking for more info on the specifics of this plan:
Hi, I’m still a bit skeptical, I have seen some of my friends do the keto diet, and have had good results. Though I am still not sure about the idea of the fats being eaten. They say they eat meat with the fat and must do so, is this correct? Also isn’t this not good for the body especially for the kidneys? Second, can a diabetic do this diet? There are many questions running through my head.
hi I have been following this diet have not had any sugar and I just want to know how am I going over the carbs I’m eating vegetables which I know are carbs but I’m not overdoing it. What is the best way to keep up with your carbs fats and proteins also do I need a scale? I feel like I lost weight this week but most of it was probably water weight I was in ketosis on Thursday and today it shows I’m not. Any help would be greatly appreciated
The common misconception about the keto diet is that it contains no fibre, and instead the dieter is left eating mountains of bacon rashers, bulletproof coffees, butter and steak. In reality, a well-formulated keto diet will consist of an array of wholefoods including leafy greens, healthy fats from nuts, seeds and coconut, and a small amount of fruit. When keto is done properly, quality fibre is provided in abundance.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder, and it affects women of reproductive age. Symptoms include obesity, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. A pilot study took 11 women through 24 weeks of a low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (20 grams or less per day). Among the five who completed the study, they lost 12 percent of their weight on average and reduced fasting insulin by 54 percent. Additionally, two women who previously experienced infertility problems became pregnant. (6)
Net carbs is simply total carbs minus fiber and non-digestible sugar alcohols, like erythritol. (This doesn’t apply to high glycemic sugar alcohols, like maltitol.) We don’t have to count fiber and certain sugar alcohols in net carbs, because they either don’t get broken down by our bodies, are not absorbed, or are absorbed but not metabolized. (Read more about sugar alcohols here.)

Achieving optimal ketosis hinges on finding the right balance of macronutrients (or “macros” in keto-speak); these are the elements in your diet that account for the majority of your calories, a.k.a. energy—namely, fat, protein, and carbohydrates. By the way, it’s often “net grams” of carbohydrates that are counted toward your daily intake; “net” deducts the amount of fiber in a food from its carbohydrate total.
2) Since this is an older blog… I will tell you that Coconut Oil is “the miracle ingredient”! It goes RIGHT to your liver and is metabolized as ketones… it is what’s called an MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride, kinda of a “good” saturated fat) I have been eating 2 – 3 tbls a day since I started back with a vengeance and will tell you not only has it helped me to be more consistent in my weight loss, but it has even improved my complexion… I am 57, and was starting to get sun spots on my cheeks… but they are actually fading after only a month.. I’ve lost 15 lbs in this first month and feel 35 again…

When it comes to starting the keto diet (or any diet for that matter), there's one thing all experts agree on. You *must* have a plan. "Never try to wing a keto diet," says Julie Stefanski, R.D.N., C.S.S.D., L.D.N., a dietitian based in York, PA, who specializes in the ketogenic diet. "Set a start date and get prepared by reorganizing your pantry, planning out meal and snack options, and purchasing appropriate foods and dietary supplements," she says. "The biggest reason people have a hard time sticking with keto is that people don't have enough interesting foods to turn to, and high-carb favorites win out over good intention. If you didn't buy foods at the grocery store that fit the guidelines, there won't be an easy option in the fridge when you really need it." (A great place to start is this List of High-Fat Keto Foods Anyone Can Add to Their Diet.)
So, I have one question… how do you keep your protein amount at moderate when several of your high fat choices are also proteins? Specifically the ground beef, eggs, dairy products, and bacon. This is really the only thing that confuses me. I’m already eating most of the above products daily b/c I believe completely in eating healthy fats, but I haven’t cut my carbs enough yet as I’m still addicted to sweets. I’m working on that though and getting better daily.
The benefits above are the most common ones. But there are others that are potentially even more surprising and – at least for some people – life changing. Did you know that a keto diet can help treat high blood pressure, may result in less acne, may help control migraine, might help with certain mental health issues and could have a few other potential benefits?
In general, as a society, we consume a lot of processed foods that are very high in sugar content. One idea that is behind the low carb weekly meal plans is that it will help to cut back the amount of sugar that we consume every day, especially the added sugars that you find in store-bought desserts and soft drinks. This meal plan also helps to cut the simple carbs that we force our bodies to process in form of sugars. Whether it is simple or actual sugar carbs, getting rid of them from your diet can be a very great deal of your energy levels and overall body health.

While there are delicious-looking ketogenic recipes and meal plans online, experts like Weaver warn that you’ll want to avoid relying too much on artificial sweeteners and unhealthy foods for your keto diet menu. Make sure your grocery list includes healthy fats like avocados, coconut oil, olive oil. This is what really happens to your body on the keto diet.

Due to the increased social related health conditions in our American population like cancer, hypertension, Diabetes, Am very conscious and strict with what I eat. We have too much carbohydrates in our diets like the processed sugars and am reducing on this content. This has pushed me to search for information on any Alternative diet like Ketogenic diet or the Low carbs diet in addition to my Tea cleansers and regular exercise that help in reducing the Harmful wastes and oils in my body. The recipes are provided in this book too and this is an added advantage.
Thank you! Yea, no bread/pasta for me, by all accounts I was eating a (what I thought and what everyone would tell me, even a dietician I went to!) ‘healthy’ diet of whole grains, rice, fruit, vegetables, low fat, etc. and couldn’t understand why I was steadily gaining weight. That’s what led me here, as I was getting so frustrated and the more I read up on low carb/ketosis and how the body processes even conventionally healthy foods, it made sense to me, but I don’t think I can give up oatmeal and fruit forever! So I will definitely just make sure I only eat those in small amounts, but that is much farther down the road anyway.. I’m on to Week 1 and I’ll post an update at the end of the week. Thanks again!

Wow! What an improvement. Would be interested in hearing what your doctor says about your results. Hopefully he has substantially reduced or eliminated any medication you were on. If not, something is amiss. The best way to accurately measure ketones is to test for hyroxy-butyric acid in the blood. The best meter is the Precision Xtra which you can find online. It measures your glucose levels and ketone levels. The only drawback is the test strips for the ketones are expensive ($5 a piece). I found good deals for these on ebay. You are most likely using ketones as a fuel now with all your weight loss. How do you feel? The main difference people talk about is their energy level. Plus you can exercise longer and recover faster if you are burning fat instead of glucose. Also, your hunger levels are greatly reduced if you are eating a high fat diet. I usually skip a meal or two just because I am not hungry. Hope that helps.
For someone new to the ketogenic diet this is a great starting cookbook.  The explanations and details within the first quarter of the book are important in informing the reader about the different ingredients that will be utilized in the recipes that you may not be familiar with.  Not only do the authors do an excellent job of describing the ingredients and their purpose, but they also offer suggestions of their preferred brands.  Most ingredients and spices used in this book are staples in ketogenic households.  Finally, the kitchen tips provide insight into storing the final products as well as temperature suggestions for preheating and ingredients.
One reason the diet is in the spotlight of late is that it’s quite controversial, with some researchers asserting that the diet may be unsafe or potentially harmful to people with a history of yo-yo dieting. The diet’s focus on fat and protein can also lead to over-reliance on processed foods and red meat, which comes with a whole host of issues. On the other hand, the ketogenic diet can serve therapeutic purposes and help treat people with certain conditions such as Alzheimer’s, brain damage, epilepsy, and diabetes.
My Husband and I started doing Keto July 2018. We got over weight after we got out of the Marine Corps. It has been hard to workout because I became disabled, but my diet was not good. After our friend Amber recommended your site and support group, we found a lot of helpful information to get us started on a successful journey. So far it’s been one month and we have lost 18 pounds each!
I’m Keto with no gallbladder, I take 3 papaya enzymes after eating anything. I mean anything. I take 9 to 15 a day. I went keto after losing my gallbladder because carbs of any kind caused gas and pain so I practically quit eating. The doc kept telling me to eat more fruits and veggies. The more I ate the sicker I got. Got down to 158 lbs and I’m 5’11”. This was a decade ago, I usually weigh about 185. I’m 54 yrs old. My blood pressure at sam’s the other day was 98/64. Flip that food pyramid upside down or throw it away. I was keto before keto was cool.
